A Journey Through San Francisco: My Unforgettable Adventure (San Francisco Travel)

Updated: Oct 12

I traveled to San Francisco in 2018.

San Francisco has always been one of those places I knew I had to visit. Its iconic landmarks and rich history seemed to call out to me. So, when the opportunity arose, I packed my bags and set out on a journey that would leave me with memories to cherish forever.

Staying in the heart of downtown San Francisco, I felt the city’s vibrant energy with its bustling streets and towering skyscrapers. I was eager to dive into everything this incredible city had to offer. I opted to use their transit system from the airport and throughout the city. I also used Uber a few times.

Fisherman's Wharf:

The legendary Fisherman’s Wharf was one of the destinations I had to go to. The lively atmosphere was infectious, with street performers entertaining the crowds and the aroma of fresh seafood filling the air. I checked out the storefronts and the seals sleeping by the bay.. I made my way to Scoma's, a restaurant renowned for its seafood. Sitting by the window, I enjoyed a sumptuous meal of clam chowder, all while gazing out at the boats bobbing in the bay. It was the perfect start to my culinary journey in San Francisco.

Golden Gate Bridge and Trolley Tour:

I decided to take a non-traditional trolley tour. I boarded one of the iconic refurbished trolley cars for a tour through the city's historic streets. The clattering of the trolley as it made its way to the Golden Gate Bridge was a nostalgic experience in itself. Seeing the bridge in person was breathtaking—the sheer scale and beauty of the structure left me in awe. The wind whipped through my hair as I walked along the bridge, with mist from the bay below adding to the sense of adventure.

Fort Point National Historic Site:

Fort Point National Historic Site, nestled right beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, was another highlight. The fort, with its brick walls and arched windows, felt like a step back in time. I wandered through its corridors, imagining the soldiers who once stood guard here, protecting the entrance to the bay. The views from the top were simply spectacular, offering a unique perspective of the bridge and the city beyond.

Sausalito:

Sausalito, a charming town just across the bay, was an absolute delight. I spent hours strolling through its quaint streets, admiring the art galleries and boutique shops. The pace of life there was slower, more relaxed, and I found myself losing track of time as I soaked in the beauty around me. To return to San Francisco, I opted for the ferry ride, which provided stunning views of the city skyline.

Muir Woods:

Muir Woods, home to the ancient redwood forest, offered a serene escape from the city. Walking among these towering giants was a humbling experience. The sheer size of the trees, some of which are over a thousand years old, made me feel incredibly small in comparison. The forest was peaceful, the air filled with the earthy scent of moss and pine needles. The average ages of the trees were between 600-800 years. I highly recommend checking the forest out.

Alcatraz:

No trip to San Francisco would be complete without a visit to Alcatraz. The boat ride to the island was eerie, I spent the crossing imagining being a prisoner heading here for the foreseeable future and viewing the island looming in the distance. Exploring the prison was both fascinating and chilling. The audio tour, narrated by former inmates and guards, brought the history of the place to life. Standing in one of the tiny cells, I could only imagine what life must have been like for those incarcerated there.

Chinatown:

Back on the mainland, Chinatown drew me in with its vibrant colors, bustling markets, and the smell of delicious food. On a whim, I decided to get a psychic reading. The fortune-teller's shop was tucked away down a narrow alley, and as I stepped inside, the scent of incense filled the air. The reading was mysterious and intriguing, adding an element of mysticism to my trip.

Mrs. Doubtfire House:

I couldn’t resist stopping by the Mrs. Doubtfire house. It was surreal to be in front of the home where the beloved movie was filmed. The house looked just as it did in the film, and I couldn’t help but smile as I remembered the scenes that took place there.

Palace of Fine Arts:

The Palace of Fine Arts, an architectural marvel, seemed to transport me to another era. The grand rotunda and serene lagoon made for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. I spent some time simply sitting by the water, taking in the beauty of the surroundings and reflecting on all the incredible experiences I’d had. I enjoyed learning about the history of the Palace of the Fine Arts, as I had never looked into this prior to going on my trip.

San Francisco truly captured my heart. From the historic landmarks to the natural wonders, every moment was filled with discovery and wonder. Staying downtown was the perfect choice, allowing me to be at the center of it all, ready to embark on new adventures each day. I felt safe travelling here solo. I would highly recommend making the trip to San Francisco.

Leaving San Francisco was bittersweet, but I knew I would carry the memories of this trip with me forever. The City by the Bay had truly lived up to its reputation, and I couldn’t wait to return someday to uncover even more of its treasures.
